Signals that MATLAB code was AI-generated
Most MATLAB is written by engineers and scientists who care about the result, not the code. Their scripts are functional and often untidy. Generated MATLAB tends to look like a polished example from the documentation.
- A full help block on every function. An uppercase H1 line, then sections for inputs, outputs and an example call, on small local functions inside a homework script.
- Input validation in coursework. An
argumentsblock, validateattributesor aninputParserin a function that only ever receives the numbers the assignment gives. - Perfectly finished plots.
xlabel, ylabel, title, legend, grid onand explicit line widths on every figure, often with units in each label. - Formatted reporting. Results printed with carefully aligned
fprintfstatements and units, where a person checking their own work would usually just leave off the semicolon. - A style that ignores the lesson. Fully vectorised code in a week that teaches
forloops, or loops with preallocation comments where the course expects element-wise operators.
The course context matters more than usual
MATLAB assignments are usually narrow: implement this method, plot that response, report these values. Many students will legitimately write near-identical scripts, and instructors often hand out starter code that sets the structure. The most useful comparison is with what the course has taught so far. Functions, toolboxes or syntax the class has not covered, such as features from a newer release than the one installed in the lab, are a stronger hint than any formatting habit.
Checking a MATLAB result
Read the listed reasons and set aside anything that the course template or MathWorks' own examples would explain. If what remains is substantial, ask the student to change one parameter and predict how the plot will move, or to explain why a particular operator has a dot in front of it. Someone who wrote the script can answer that in seconds.

Frequently asked questions
MATLAB is not in the language menu. Does it still work?
Yes. Leave the menu on Auto-detect and the analysis recognises MATLAB from the syntax. If it is mistaken for another language, choose Other.
Can I paste a Live Script?
Paste the code from it. Export the Live Script as a plain .m file, or copy the code sections, so the snippet contains MATLAB rather than formatted output.
Does it work for Octave code?
Mostly, since the syntax overlaps heavily. Octave-specific features such as # comments are part of what the analysis reads.
Is clc; clear; close all a sign of AI?
No. That opening line is taught in many engineering courses and is extremely common in human scripts. On its own it says nothing about authorship.
Is my code stored?
No. The snippet goes to a third-party AI model provider (Groq, with Google Gemini as a fallback) for the analysis and the result comes straight back to you. We do not save the code or write it to our logs.
